The Players Championship Grand Finals - Review
A Tournament Marked by Big Shocks
Finish with Hawkins' Triumph
Like I said here before, this event had all to make big surprises, because every player is preparing himself to play the World Championship - which starts April 19 - and every player do it in a different way.
First round exits for Neil Robertson, Ding Junhui and Mark Selby looked to be the biggest surprises at The Guild Hall, but a Last 16 exit for the World Champion Ronnie O`Sullivan after a 4-3 defeat against Yu Delu - match which Ronnie made the highest break of the event (140) - shows that the tournament was going to be strange and strange until the end.
Gerard Greene was far the biggest surprise of the week, reaching to his first ever Ranking Event final after victories over the likes of Ricky Walden, Mark Allen and Marco Fu.
The other finalist was Hawkins, who produced one of the biggest wins of his life in the Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Judd Trump.
The final - also on Saturday - was dominated by Hawkins, who whitewashed his friend and practice partner with a 117 top break to catch the second Ranking Title of his career.
This tournament also decided the top seeds for the World Championship, you can see the draw at the Pro Snooker Blog.
The next tournament will be the China Open - running from March 31 to April 6.
This event isn't counting with some top players (O`Sullivan is one of them), and have already 3 official withdraws (Maguire, Bingham and Drago) because the players prefer stay home (England) to practice for the World Championship (At the Crucible - England), and a long travel to China, for may back just one week before the WSC isn't a good thing for the players.
Because of all it, I'm not interested in this event and I will not write reviews or previews here (I will write if something special happens). Anyway you can always follow all results and news from the world of snooker in my Facebook page, Ronnie O`Sullivan Brasil.
