Ng On Yee and Mark Selby win Paul Hunter Classic, Un-Nooh makes 147 and more...

Paul Hunter Classic Champions 2016

We finally had a week full of Snooker after the Olympic break, and we've got a lot to talk about.
Firstly I'd like to talk about the women's Paul Hunter Classic, it's a great initiative from World Snooker and WLBS to make a Ladies' event alongside the main event because it will get people interested about it and will put the women's game in the bottom lines.
The winner was Ng On Yee and she pocketed the prize of €3,200 after beating 11x World Champion Reanne Evans in the Final, plus €400 for making the highest break (104). It's great to see On Yee winning tournaments, she has already been crowned World Champion and is very popular in Hong Kong, hopefully she keeps it going, we know it not easy to make a living from playing in the ladies' Snooker.

This weekend also saw Thepchaiya Un-Nooh finally making his so waited Maximum Break. After missing the Final black for a 147 not just once but twice last season, he finally sunk that in. Un-Nooh's 147 came in the last 32 against Kurt Maflin and earned him £40,000. Un-Nooh is incredibly quick, a great break-builder and delightful to watch, just on day one, apart from the maximum he made Breaks of 120 and 141. He then advanced to the semi-finals where he got defeated by Tom Ford.
Un-Nooh is without a doubt an unique talent, and I'm sure he will become a serial title winner when he gets more experience. Sometimes he seems a bit too anxious and should step back and take a deep breathe in crucial moments, he'll learn that with time. Even though he's already a World Champion and nothing will take that away from him, by the way early next month he'll be defendning his 6Reds World Title. Anyway I think he wants to be successful in the main tour and get into the Top 16.

Jimmy White's run to the quarter-finals is also worth a line here. The 54 year-old has recently revealed to have lost several stones in a diet and said he's been practicing as hard as ever, and it's great to see that's been paid off.
However Jimmy White still dreams of winning the World Championship. Well you can say he's a 10 times Ranking Events winner and a former UK and Masters Champion, also a 6x World Championship finalist, but you can also say he was unsuccessful having lost 6 World Finals and never won one - and I think sometimes Jimmy himself thinks this way. Anyway this season will be the ultimate for him, it's now or never really.

The main event (and I call it this way because women are eligible to play the event that many called the men's event) was won by Mark Selby. It's fantastic how good Selby's record at the Paul Hunter Classic is, he won it back-to-back in 2011 and 2012 and reached the semis in 2013 where he lost to eventual winner; now he has become the first player to win this prestigious event three times. It's nice to see Selby doing well early in the season because when he won the World Championship for the first time in 2014 it took him several months to win something again, but now he has lifted a trophy in the third tournament he has played since winning the World Championship and we hope he carries this mantle better this time.

It wasn't all perfect in Fürth this year though - well the fans were perfect like always but -, there was some issues with Eurosport's online broadcast and people that didn't have it on TV struggled to watch it. Well I really think this is unacceptable, because Snooker is one of the - if not the - leading sport in Eurosport's menu and it's the second event they were broadcasting online, these problems must be solved.

Now it feels that the season has finally kicked off, in the upcoming weeks we'll have the Shanghai Masters Qualifiers, the 6Reds World Championship and the Shanghai Masters.
