Undisputed Champion - Selby wins again!
Mark Selby beat John Higgins 18-15 in a thrilling World Championship Final at the Crucible |
Favourite from the start, Mark Selby once again won the World Championship at the Crucible this year as you all already know. His 18-15 triumph v John Higgins in the Final told everyone he has set the bar at which every player must attempt to reach.
His grit and all-round game, with the ability to get results even when he's struggling or having a bad day (something normal in individual sports) makes him almost unbeatable over the distance at the Crucible. But his fluency and heavy-scoring this season has totally pushed him away from the field and he now sees himself way ahead of anyone else and undoubtedly regarded as the best player in the World - and who knows, one day he might make people wonder whether he's been the best of all time!
However, I am here to show you what is behind Selby's hat-trick victories at the Crucible that, in an era so often described as the most competitive, explains his dominance:
- Renowned for the legenday comebacks Selby has produced in his career, once again he came from behind to win a World Championhip Final. He once trailed John Higgins 4-10 on day one, but by the end of session three he already led 13-11;
- To reach a World Championship Final speaks for itself that you are a great player, but Mark Selby have particulary made it the hard way. He has met now two in-form all-time greats over the 35 frames at the Crucible - 5-times winner Ronnie O`Sullivan and 4-times winner John Higgins -, and has not just beaten them both, but coming from behind against each. His win over John Higgins made Ronnie O`Sullivan say "no one can beat Mark Selby at the Crucible";
- Mark Selby has joint Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry as the only players to win three World Championships in four years, something that hadn't happened since 1996. And he has also joined Davis, Hendry and Ronnie O`Sullivan as the only players to defend a Crucible crown - a first since O`Sullivan's winning return in 2013;
- Victory at the Crucible was Selby's 5th Ranking tournament of the season, a record-equalizer (Stephen Hendry 1990/91 and Ding Junhui 2013/14). And as far as I know, this has been the best season any player has ever had: Selby won the three tournaments that awards more Ranking Points (World Championship, UK Championship and International Championship), as well as the prestigious Paul Hunter Classic and the firmly established China Open (Mark Selby also became the first player ever to win the China Open and the World Championship back-to-back);
- Mark Selby earned a record £ 859,550 this season, not counting money earned in first round defeats (even though he had barely any) or invitational tournaments;
- With comfortably more than twice as many Ranking points as World No2 John Higgins, Mark Selby is finishing the season at the top of the World Rankings for the sixth consecutive time.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned because we're soon coming back with the 2016/17 season review (like Ronnie O`Sullivan Brasil on Facebook and be the first to know when that comes out)! 😉
